Maths Curriculum

Here at St Philip’s Primary school, we value mathematics for the creative subject that it is and teach it in a way to promote enjoyment and curiosity about the subject. We believe that a high quality mathematics education provides a foundation for understanding the world and will equip our pupils with essential skills needed for everyday life and future employment. At our school, these skills are embedded within mathematics lessons and developed consistently over time. The pupils will spend time becoming true masters of content, applying and being creative with their new knowledge in multiple ways.

Through the 2014 National Curriculum for Mathematics, we aim for all children to:

  • become fluent in the fundamentals of mathematics so that they develop clear understanding and the ability to recall and apply knowledge rapidly and accurately.
  • be able to solve problems by applying their mathematics to a variety of problems with increasing sophistication, including in unfamiliar contexts and to model real-life scenarios.
  • reason mathematically by following a line of enquiry and develop and present a justification, argument or proof using mathematical language.
  • have an appreciation of number and number operations, which enables mental calculations and written procedures to be performed efficiently, fluently and accurately to be successful in mathematics.

Maths at St Philip’s:

  • Basic mathematics skills are taught daily. Focusing on key arithmetic skills including place value, the four operations and fractions.
  • A range of reasoning resources are used to challenge all children and give them the opportunity to reason with their understanding.
  • Mathematics interventions are used to support children to fill gaps and to ensure children are ready for their next lesson.
  • Children are taught through targeted differentiated small group and mixed ability whole class lessons.
  • Lessons use a Concrete – Pictorial – Abstract approach to guide children through their understanding of mathematical processes.
  • Review and revise lessons are used to revisit previous learning and ensure mathematics skills are embedded.
  • Homework is set to develop and review children’s learning, linked to the topics taught that week.
  • Where possible, links are made with other subjects across the curriculum.

Times Tables Competition
Here at St Philip’s, we understand that the ability to recall times tables fluently is essential for future success in mathematics. To motivate our pupils to learn their
times tables, we hold an annual times tables competition. Pupils are rewarded with stickers on a chart as they progress with their learning and then medals are awarded to class champions. Class champions then have the option to compete in front of the whole school where the ultimate champion is awarded a trophy.
